I think we can all agree that 2021 will be a nice fresh start after the 2020 we have all experienced. With that said, it’s always exciting to set up some goals to accomplish during the upcoming year. I know most people set up all these goals that end up be forgotten about by February, but these are good goal ideas you won’t want to give up on. Here are some practical New Years resolutions you will want to keep in 2021.
Get on Top of Your Finances
Finances can be a huge challenge. Think of what finical goals you want to accomplish this year. Maybe you want to pay off all your debt, or maybe reach a savings goal in your emergency fund. Everyone is at a different spot in their finance journey so focus on goals that are specific to you. Some other goals include: creating and sticking to a budget, starting to invest if you haven’t already, and cutting back on impulsive purchases.
Try a New Hobby
Has being in quarantine pushed you to try a few new things? Maybe you found a love for baking banana bread or discovered your creative side by tie-dyeing your own sweat sets. It was easy to try these new things with so much extra time on your hands. Don’t lose that momentum in 2021! Put aside the time to try new things and discover new hobbies. If you’re stuck, consider baking, blogging or painting.
Create Specific Fitness Goals
Everyone always says they will start working out January 1st. This is great, but it doesn’t always last long. Try and create specific fitness goals for yourself to help you stay on track past February. Maybe that’s going to the gym 3 days a week, running a mile, or going to a fitness class once a week. If you’re specific about your goal you’ll be more likely to stick with it.
Travel Somewhere New
When thinking about New Years resolutions you will want to keep in 2021, think about what you may have missed out on in 2020. Did you have big travel plans or a fun trip planned? Yeah, sorry about that. Even though things may not be back to “normal” in 2021 you can still make traveling happen. Look into the possibility or road trips, visiting national parks or even discovering the hidden gems in your local area.
Support More Local Businesses
If you haven’t started doing this already, 2021 is a good time to start. Maybe you order takeout from a local restaurant once a week or you start going to the local coffee shop on your way to work. These businesses really rely on the community to survive and it’s great to support them. If money is tight and you don’t have the means to support financially, even leaving positive reviews on Facebook and Yelp can do wonders.
Learn a New Skill to Add to Your Resume
This can vary depending on what type of field you are in, but learning a new skill or earning a new certification can be so helpful for you and your career. Skillshare and MasterClass are great tools to help get you started. You can learn skills like graphic design, creative writing, business analytics, leadership and so much more. Of course if you are just looking to dip your toe in the water, YouTube is a great free resource to start learning new skills.
Listen to More Podcasts
Listening to podcast may seem like an odd resolution, but there is so much knowledge to be learned just by listening. Whether you want to improve money management, boost positive thinking or even gather some insightful parenting advice, there is a podcast for you.
If you’re a big music listener like me, switching over to podcast can take some getting used to. Try playing them while you’re at the gym, driving to working, taking a shower or cleaning the house. I’m often surprised with what I take away from just a 30 minute podcast and I think you will be too!

These are all great goals for the new year. I think I need a checklist with all of these things and put it on my wall to look at each morning and each evening. At the end of the day, I can check a box. For some reason, being able to check boxes is very motivating to me. lol
