The holiday season is more than just wrapping the perfect present and baking cookies. Though both of those things are a great way to get in the holiday spirit, it’s important to give back to the community. Here are 5 simple ways you can give back this holiday season.
Participate in a Toy Drive
We’ll start with the obvious and that’s a toy drive. There are so many organizations out there collecting gifts for kids that the opportunities to give toys are endless. To get an idea on where to start, check out your local children’s hospital or church. They typically advertise what kind of toys they are looking for so you can get a good idea of what kind of child you are buying for. Also, look on your city’s website for ideas. I know my town has boxes around the city’s most popular spots like the gym and library where you can drop off toys.
Donate Coats
Donating a gently used winter coat is a great option if you are looking to give back but may be on a super tight budget. This website is an amazing resource to find donation centers nearest you. Also, if you bring in a coat to donate at Eddie Bauer from November 5 – April 30, you get $10 your purchase on outerwear. So, definitely clean out your closest and see if you have any coat that no longer fits that you could donate to someone in need.
Give to the Salvation Army
How many times have you seen someone ringing a bell on your way outside the grocery store asking for donations? Consider donating a few dollars or even your spare change anytime you see someone asking for donations. This might not seem like much, but it such a simple way to make a difference.
Donate Items to an Animal Shelter
Local animal shelters are always in need of supplies. Often, it’s things as simple as paper towels, detergent and blankets that they need the most. Give your local shelter a call to see what they need as far as food a toys. It’s not uncommon that they request specific brands.
Give the gift of time
Anyone can write a check and drop it in the mailbox. And although organizations are always in need of monetary donations, considering taking a Saturday or two to volunteer your time to an organization in need. This may be difficult during COVID times so you’ll have to do your research. Hospitals may be a no go but places like food banks will need some extra hands this time of year.

This is a really lovely idea. My mum was telling me about a reverse advent calendar that you can do for December, by doing something nice for someone else every day ie leave a book on a bench etc. I thought that was a really nice way of giving back at Christmas.

What a great list! It’s funny how some people thing of giving and some of receiving. I’ve been surrounded by those that need to receive and it really turned me off of the holiday. I then started to focus on giving to those in need and not those in want, and it did 2 things. 1) it made me feel better for giving and for not being around the wrong people and 2) it always helped someone out who needed it. Thanks for sharing you list!
